What are some good nonacidic beverages?
Herbal teas and milks are examples of beverages that are nonacidic. Other nonacidic drinks include mineral water, noncitrus fruit juices such as apple, and vegetable juices.
Many people search for nonacidic beverages because of acid reflux disease or to protect their teeth. Herbal teas can actually soothe stomach problems and improve digestion. Chamomile, licorice, slippery elm and marshmallow root teas are all nonacidic beverages that also soothe the stomach. The American Dietetic Association recommends staying away from spearmint or peppermint if acid reflux is an issue.
Any milk is nonacidic. However, whole milk can be hard to digest. Skim milk or goat’s milk is recommended for people with acid reflux.
Apple, pear and peach are all fruit juices that are nonacidic. Pear juice is the least acidic of the three with a pH of 3.5 to 4.6. Both peach and apple juices range from 3.3 to 4 on the pH scale.
Vegetable juices also tend to be nonacidic. These include cabbage, carrot and aloe vera juices. However, tomato juice is on the acidic side, so any vegetable juice mixed with tomato is acidic.
Mineral water is also nonacidic. In general, basic flavor additives do not add to the acidity of water.
For alcoholic beverages, beer and wine are nonacidic. Most distilled alcohols are acidic.
