Asantehemaa’s funeral: 50 Doctors, 250 Nurses to be deployed

A total of 50 doctors and 250 nurses are to be deployed to man mobile clinics that will be set up at the funeral grounds of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II on January 16, 2017.

The move is to prepare for any eventuality that may occur or casualties that may be recorded during the funeral which is expected to be attended by thousands of Ghanaians from across the country and foreign dignitaries.

The Funeral Planning Committe, which comprises heads of the Red Cross Society, the Waste Management Department, the Metro-Health Directorate and the ambulance services has pledged to ensure an incident-free event as far as the health and safety of attendees are concerned.

The Chairman of committee in charge of medical, sanitation and waste for the funeral, Nana Baffour Osei Shiaman Brentuo VI, has said they are expecting people from all walks of life to cooperate with them, therefore the committee have to put up measures for the safety of the people who will attend the funeral of the late queen mother of Asanteman.

Meanwhile, Asanteman Traditional Council has declared Saturday 14th January 2017 as Asanteman Sanitation day ahead of the late Asantehemaa’s funeral.

Residents of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region are to embark on a three-day major clean-up exercise within the metropolis as part of preparations towards the burial of the late Asantehemaa.

The Medical, Sanitation and Environment sub-committee in charge of the laying in state and burial rites of Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II is urging residents to participate fully.

The Director of the Waste Management Department at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, John Gorkeh Miah, speaking at press conference said his outfit would also arrest and prosecute persons who litter indiscriminately.

“Our charge is to ensure that Kumasi is clean and devoid of filth on the streets. We have charged all the environmental health officers to intensify house-to-house inspections and prosecutions. If they see any filth, they should arrest those perpetrating it and put them before court,” he stated.
